Current Trends in Recruitment and Retention of Qualified Rehabilitation Counseling Personnel


Abstract
Rehabilitation counseling professionals have emphasized counselors¡¯ performance of individualized tasks, competencies relevant to the provision of appropriate services for clients, and cultivation of qualified counselors. Since the passage of legislation related to vocational rehabilitation services for people with disabilities, there has been an ongoing effort to cultivate and acquire qualified service providers. However, the majority of rehabilitation agencies are currently experiencing a shortage of qualified rehabilitation counselors who can provide services for clients with disabilities due to several reasons. This study will provide insight into the current trends of personnel shortages in the rehabilitation system and provide strategies to educate, recruit, and retain prospective rehabilitation counselors. Finally, the implications for rehabilitation professionals in South Korea will be discussed.
